VOLAR
womanhood + Sanity: SUbversion in AVIATION
BY KATY Barnett
Katy is a Salt Lake based airline pilot. Sharing her story here is an attempt to open the conversation about mental health among pilots and pass on the creative spark that furthered her own healing. This is not a blog about flying. This is a blog about how to take care of ourselves outside of the airplane. This is a connection point - to ideas, to art, to philanthropy, to other women, and back to ourselves.
THE way back from gRIEF: an art project
How do we welcome ourselves back from grief? How do we make space for ourselves to heal as aviators before someone else decides what timeline is best for us? For me, it was through reconnecting to my body. Learning it, finding safety in it, enjoying the hell out of it, and passing it on through art.
Honor the feminine: Create, let go.
Volar FLIGHT BAG
This is where this project started. In December 2020, I broke my wrist on a walk around, stopped flying and got bored. While grounded, I had the idea to make a flight bag for myself. I had been through many, none of which were designed with women in mind. I wanted to change that and pass on the proceeds, through scholarship, to women who are just beginning to fly.

We can’t do all this alone.
Here are some recommendations for content that inspired my progress.
This website is a space to take pride in and share what you care about. Any projects shared by other female aviators will be linked here. Please feel free to be the first!
